~Frequently Asked Questions~
When should we contact you to organise the Bris? As soon as possible after the birth.
My parents-in-law live abroad. Can we schedule the Bris beyond the eighth day so they can attend? This is not advisable for two reasons. Firstly, the correct time prescribed is the eighth day, and secondly it is advisable to do the Bris as soon as the baby is fit and well, before the baby may come down with a cold or sticky eye etc. which could cause a further delay.
Our baby is jaundiced and we are concerned that by the time he has his Bris he will be several weeks old. Will he feel it more? I believe that up until about 12 weeks of age there is not much difference in the awareness of the baby in relation to the Bris.
Will our baby be in pain afterwards? No one can say for sure how much the baby feels. I firmly believe that the baby does not feel the actual Bris, as it is done swiftly with a sharp blade. Similarly, were you to cut yourself with a sharp non-serrated blade you do not feel anything at the actual time of the injury. Only later when you have noticed the wound does it hurt. Your baby does not notice the wound. The baby may cry because its legs are being firmly held apart and soon stops crying once he has been picked-up and cuddled. In my experience once your baby has had a few drops of wine and a feed, it is all behind him. What may slightly upset your baby is the passing of urine for the first 24 hours until he gets used to the new sensation. Once the dressing is removed on the following day he will be back to his normal routine.
Should we use a Dr or a Mohel, and can our baby be given an anaesthetic? A Dr is a Jack of all Trades, where as a Mohel is highly trained and experienced in one procedure only. By using an authorised Mohel you can be sure that your baby is in the best hand, for the job at hand ! Anaesthetics themselves carry risks and are painful to administer. In my opinion, if the baby is circumcised in the traditional Jewish method by a qualified Mohel, which is swift and does not involve the use of clamps or similar painful instruments, then the risks associated with an anaesthetic and the pain involved in administering it, are not warranted. I am also opposed to the use of anaesthetic creams, such as ELMA. I have noticed that when ELMA is used the bleeding can take longer to clot and can also cause swelling. The manufacturer clearly states that it is not to be used on babies.
My wife and I are not very observant Jews. Does this pose a problem? I serve all levels of the community.
This is our first child and someone mentioned that we have another Mitzvah (good deed) to perform when he is a month old. Can you please explain? Yes indeed you do have, and it is called 'Pidyon Haben', redemption of the male first born (Exodus 13,13). This usually takes place on the 31st day from the baby's birth. If this is applicable then your Rabbi or myself can advise you further.
